Never Ask Permission : Elisabeth Scott Bocock of Richmond

Never Ask Permission : Elisabeth Scott Bocock of Richmond

Some cities, through hardship or glory or a combination of both, produce extraordinary women. Richmond in the early twentieth century, dominated by its prominent families and still haunted by the ghosts of its Confederate past, produced a galaxy of such characters, including Ellen Glasgow, Mary Cooke Branch Munford, and Lila Meade Valentine. Elisabeth Scott Bocock, Victorian in values but modern in outlook, carried on this tradition with her unique combination of family wealth and connections, boundless energy, eccentricity, and visionary zeal. Her daughter Mary Buford Hitz's candid memoir reveals the pleasures and frustrations of growing up with a woman who expected so much from her children and from the city whose self-appointed guardian she became.
Elisabeth Bocock's vision was of a city that would take historic preservation seriously, of a society that would accept the importance of conservation. Impatient with process and society's conventions, she used her enormous personal magnetism to circumvent them when founding many of the institutions Richmond takes for granted today. In the creation of the Historic Richmond Foundation, the Carriage Museum at Maymont, the Hand Workshop, and the Virginia Chapter of the Nature Conservancy she played the dual roles of visionary and bulldozer. While part of a tradition of strong southern women, Elisabeth Bocock's tactics were unique, as she sought to convince others of both the practical and aesthetic links between preservation and the environment.
One of the "five little Scotts," children of the founder of the investment firm Scott & Stringfellow, she grew up with great privilege, and she schooled her children in how to take advantage of such privilege and how to ignore it. Whether in their winter residence at 909 West Franklin Street in Richmond or at their summer home, Royal Orchard, in the Blue Ridge Mountains, in her household she insisted both on achievement and on avoiding boredom at all costs.
As Mary Buford Hitz recounts with intelligence and feeling, her mother often seemed like a natural force, leveling anything that stood in its way but leaving in its wake a brighter, changed world. Never Ask Permission is not only a daughter's honest portrait of a charismatic and difficult woman who broke the threads of convention; in Elisabeth Scott Bocock we recognize the flawed but feisty, enduring character of Richmond.

Bona Allen Mansion Buford Ga. National Register for Historic Places

Bona Allen Mansion Buford Ga. National Register for Historic Places

Mr. Allen spared no expense when building his home in Buford . Designed by noted Atlanta architect, Haralson Bleckley, the main house has 17 rooms, twelve foot ceilings, original carved wood paneling, intricate moldings, stained glass windows, and seven fireplaces. The magnificent two story entry showcases an original Italian wall mural of the Castello Villa Franca in South Rome. The mansion is a wonderful example of the "Italianate" style with its cream colored brick and red clay tile roof. The lion sculptures which flank the front steps are replicas of works by renowned sculptor, Antonio Canova (1757-1822). The originals may be found at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. The home sits on six walled acres of manicured grounds and gardens with five original out buildings including a carriage house and a caretaker’s cottage. At one point, the Allen’s property included over1700 acres.

Bona Allen Sr. lived in the mansion until his death in 1925. The estate then became home to Bona Allen Jr. who resided there until his death in 1964. The property was purchased in 1968 by the Tandy Corporation who operated the leather goods business until its demise.

While the name Bona Allen is synonymous with the leather industry in Buford, it was his older brother, R.H. Allen, who established the first tanning operation here in late 1870, early 1871. R.H., though partially paralyzed and unable to walk, worked tirelessly. He traveled by goat cart soliciting business, selling hides, and manufacturing saddles, harnesses, bridles, and other leather goods.

TTA Blue Line

TTA Blue Line

The Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover (also called the Blue Line, TTA and Tomorrowland's Super-Skyway), formerly known as the WEDWay PeopleMover until 1994 and the Tomorrowland Transit Authority until 2010, is a peoplemover system in Tomorrowland in the Magic Kingdom at the Walt Disney World Resort. Themed as an urban mass transit system of the future, riders are taken on a train ride around the second floor of many attractions in Tomorrowland. It has one station, in the center of Rockettower Plaza, located beneath the landmark Astro Orbiter. The TTA's leisurely pace, and lack of long queue lines, along with the sneak previews of other more extreme Tomorrowland attractions it offers make it a favorite attraction among repeat visitors.

The WEDWay PeopleMover opened on July 1, 1975, based on the first prototype PeopleMover at Disneyland in California. Because it did not utilize the propulsion system of rotating Goodyear tires used in the original, (instead using linear synchronous motors), Goodyear opted not to sponsor the east coast version. The Edison Electric Institute was the original sponsor of the ride. The original narration track was provided by longtime Disney voice, Jack Wagner. In June 1985, his narration was replaced by the voice of ORAC One - "The Commuter Computer". Instead of an open track with covered cars, this ride was designed the opposite from the Disneyland version: open-air cars with a ceiling over the track.

In the spring of 1994, Tomorrowland underwent a massive refurbishment that changed the theme of the land from being a showcase of future technology to a working city of the future. The WEDway PeopleMover received new physical theming as most of the track was updated from smooth Googie-esque white forms to boldly colored metallic structures.

It was during this refurbishment that the attraction's name changed from the WEDWay PeopleMover to Tomorrowland Transit Authority. A new narration was added, with the tour led by Pete Renaday broadcasting from TTA Central. This 1994 recording remained largely unaltered until October 2, 2009, which came shortly after the ride had reopened following a five month down period during the refurbishment of Space Mountain, when it was replaced with a more general tour narration.

On August 5, 2010, it was announced that the name "PeopleMover" would be re-instated into the ride's name, effectively changing it to Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover. [1] However, many people still refer to it as simply the Tomorrowland Transit Authority.

Changes made in the 1994 narration over its 15 years of use included the following:

The replacement of the narration for the south show building in 1996 when Delta Dreamflight became Take Flight. This narration was replaced again when Take Flight was turned into Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin in 1998.
The 1994 narration for Space Mountain said, "Now arriving in Space Mountain, Tomorrowland's gateway to the Galaxy, Presented by Federal Express," noting Space Mountain's sponsorship by FedEx. When FedEx dropped sponsorship in 2004, the narration was altered to cut off after "Galaxy."
A narration was played upon leaving the south show building tunnel mentioning The Timekeeper from 1994 to 2006 when The Timekeeper closed. When that closed, the narration on the TTA mentioning it was removed.

The line is a one-way loop, with a brief stretch at the entrance to Space Mountain operating with two-way traffic. At this point, the trains pass so close to one another that it is possible to reach out and touch hands with people in the oncoming train, though a tongue-in-cheek safety spiel warned guests (specifically visitors from Galaxy M-31) from doing so. The only switches are at Space Mountain, where the main ride track passes through the ride dome and storage tracks run around the outside perimeter. The design of the station platform has guests boarding and disembarking the cars onto a moving platform. This allows the vehicles to remain in motion at all times. The LSMs control the speed of trains, so that they move at the speed of the moving platform in the station and at a moderate pace on the rest of the ride.

Seattle Center Monorail

Seattle Center Monorail

The monorail runs for 0.9 miles. It is built on 62 prestressed concrete piers that support the concrete beams on which the trains run. The entire line is elevated. A complete, one way trip takes approximately two minutes. The monorail's two original Alweg trains, built in 1962, are still in service. The four car trains, which ride on 64 rubber pneumatic tires, are powered through 700 Volt D.C. contact rails in the beams. Seattle's monorail trains are the only Alweg trains in operation anywhere in the world today. The trains boast large head end windows - a rail fan's dream with their great views as the trains smoothly glide along the beams. With a maximum speed of 50 mph, Seattle's monorail remains the fastest full-sized monorail system in the U.S. The monorail's trains are manually operated. The operator sits on the left side of the train's head end. Unlike most, if not all, manually operated subway systems, the operator is not segregated from the passengers in a separate compartment.
